What does InfectRisk do?
InfectRisk shows your personal infection risk for the three most common respiratory diseases: flu (influenza), COVID-19, and RSV. The app calculates how much you're currently at risk based on your age and possible pre-existing conditions — using official surveillance data.
Where does the data come from?
All data comes from publicly available sources of recognized health authorities:
- RKI GrippeWeb — Syndromic surveillance of acute respiratory infections (Germany)
- RKI COVID-ARE — Consultation incidence of acute respiratory infections (Germany)
- RKI AMELAG — Wastewater surveillance for respiratory viruses (Germany)
- ECDC ERVISS — European respiratory virus surveillance (EU/EEA)
- CDC NHSN — Hospital respiratory data (USA)
- UKHSA Dashboard — Respiratory virus surveillance (United Kingdom)
Dark figure estimates are based on scientific studies:
- HZI MuSPAD Study — Antibody prevalence study for dark figure estimation (Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research)
- Fraunhofer ITWM — Statistical modeling of unreported cases
Data is typically updated weekly. Between updates, the app uses nowcasting methods to provide daily estimates.
How current is the data?
The data is automatically updated as soon as each health authority publishes new figures. This usually happens weekly. The app shows you when the last dataset was published.
Between weekly updates, InfectRisk uses a nowcasting approach that calculates daily estimates based on wastewater data and trends.
Why do the numbers differ from the news?
InfectRisk shows estimated figures that account for the dark figure — infections that are never tested or reported. Official numbers in the news only reflect lab-confirmed cases. Studies show that the actual number of infections is 4 to 5 times higher, depending on the pathogen.
Is InfectRisk a substitute for medical advice?
No. InfectRisk is an informational app and does not replace medical consultation, diagnosis, or treatment. The app provides general assessments based on epidemiological data. If you have health concerns, please consult a healthcare professional.
What data does the app store about me?
Only the information you provide yourself: age and optional pre-existing conditions. This data stays exclusively on your device — it is never transmitted to us or third parties. There is no tracking, no analytics, and no registration. You can delete all data at any time by removing the app.
The app doesn't show data for my country
InfectRisk currently supports 33 countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and 28 additional EU/EEA states. If your country isn't included, it's likely not covered by the ECDC surveillance system. We're working on integrating additional data sources in the future.
Technical issues
If the app can't load data, please check your internet connection. The app needs an active connection to fetch the latest surveillance data. Previously loaded data is cached locally and remains available offline.
If problems persist, write to us at hey@infectrisk.com — ideally with a brief description of the issue and your iOS version.
